Welcome to the second Issue of The Challenger, Alberici’s employee newsletter. I hope everyone was able to take some time to enjoy the summer before we move into the busy holiday season.

The third quarter was productive across the company. We had over $1 billion in wins in August alone and are at $1.8 billion in sales for the year against our goal of $1.6 billion. You can read more about our recent wins in the Pipeline Report below. Several projects also hit significant milestones, from groundbreakings at Mid-Barataria and the solar energy plant in Idaho to the reopening of Dresden Island Lock & Dam.

We recently announced Alberici’s acquisition of Filanc, a California-based design-build contractor that will strengthen our work in water, wastewater, water supply, and environmental markets in the Western United States. This acquisition will close at the end of October and marks an exciting new chapter for Alberici. This addition will significantly increase our geographic reach, while Filanc’s deep experience with advanced water treatment facilities will enhance our already strong water and wastewater capabilities. One of Alberici’s top initiatives has been to expand in the California market, and Filanc will give Alberici an immediate footprint in this key geography as well as in Colorado and Arizona.

You can learn more about Filanc, its projects, and its capabilities on the Commons.

Thank all of you for your hard work this year – I appreciate all you do to make Alberici a success.
Safety: Make It Personal. Make It Yours!
By now, everyone on our project sites and offices should have received their “Make It Personal” safety stickers. Please put them on your helmets, or anywhere where it can be serve as a personal reminder about the importance of safety both at work and outside of work.

The “Make it Personal” sticker was initially used to identify those team members who had completed the IIF Orientation. We quickly realized that the power of that statement went beyond just checking who had completed the training. The “Make It Personal” message embodies the “why” we do what we do when it comes to our safety and the safety of others. It highlights the fact that behind every safety incident, there’s a real person who is impacted, along with people who are connected to them: family members, co-workers, friends, etc. It acknowledges that the person impacted could be any one of us; it could be you!

Research shows that our beliefs about a specific topic shape our attitudes, which in turn drive our actions and behaviors. When we believe in and acknowledge the impact of safety on our personal wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, including our loved ones, we’re more willing to embrace a mindset that proactively 1) plans for safety; 2) communicates with others; 3) observes changes and deviations from the plan; and 4) improves future plans based on lessons learned from the past. That’s the essence of our SafeRing Program:  Making Safety Personal, Making It Yours.

As we continue along our corporate journey to an Incident and Injury Free workplace, we’ve renamed our “Safety Moment” at the start of all meetings to “Make It Personal Moment.” While the safety-focused content for these discussions remains the same, we’re now emphasizing how that content relates to you personally based on your experience at work and outside of work.  Hence, we’d like to invite you to make the most of the “Make It Personal” moment next time you have an opportunity to share with others about your own safety journey. Make it yours!

Phase Planning at P&G Terminus Leads to Schedule Savings

The Procter & Gamble Terminus team recently held a Phase Plan to sequence their work for foundations. Phase Planning – part of Lean’s Last Planner System – involves the larger team collaborating on how best to sequence and complete work within the time parameters identified in the CPM schedule.

This phase included team members from Procter & Gamble, Alberici, Miller-Valentine, PayneCrest, Keeley, and Murphy. Keith Williams, Alberici’s lead superintendent at Terminus, led the team through the Phase Plan. The team worked backward from the milestones identified in CPM and quickly realized the sequence chosen to drill and install piers would push them more than two weeks past their identified end date. The team talked through solutions and ended up resequencing the drilled piers.

The project team’s insights during the phase planning process shaved off the additional two weeks, allowing the team to finish one week earlier than originally planned.
Alberici and joint venture partner Archer Western broke ground on the $3 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project. The largest ecosystem restoration project in Louisiana history, the project will combat coastal erosion and deliver a restored environment.
Alberici and joint venture partner Woodward & Curran have poured 5,500 CY of concrete to date at the Wright City Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project will be completed in January 2025.
Dresden Island Lock & Dam reopened on schedule on October 1 following a major rehabilitation with a 120-day closure schedule. Alberici crews worked around the clock to make this critical achievement possible.
Alberici and Flintco Renewable Energy broke ground at Cat Creek Energy and Water’s 143 MW Solar PV Plant in Eden, Idaho. The project consists of over 250,000 solar modules and encompasses 525 acres of land.
Brewer Science held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly expanded Vichy Manufacturing Center. With a 50% increase in footprint, the facility will be used for advanced manufacturing.
Alberici poured the slab-on-deck on top of the 50-meter-high malt silos at the Constellation Brands ROS project in Obregon. This major milestone allows the team to start the penthouse steel structure installation and installation of critical process equipment.
Alberici achieved a milestone at risk at the Constellation Brands Nava plant by readying an area for Sidel Can Line 19 equipment installation.
Alberici mobilized to the Hershey Mounds-Almond Joy project in Robinson, Illinois, and equipment is starting to arrive on site.
Hillsdale craft signed the topping out beam for the NextStar Energy EV Battery Plant. Hillsdale produced 30,000 tons of structural steel for the 4.5-million-SF lithium ion battery plant. The beam is now on its way to Windsor, Ontario.
Apple Crumble Bars
Prep: 30 mins

Bake: 30 mins

Yield: 16 Bars

Base and Streusel Topping

141 g – butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing

113 g – white whole-wheat flour

89 g – rolled oats

141 g – dark brown sugar

50 g – confectioners’ sugar

¼ tsp – baking soda

Pinch – fine sea salt

Filling

150 g – apple butter

113 g – dried apples

113 g – dried cherries, golden raisins or other dried fruit
John A. Tip: Add a shot of bourbon to dried fruits and let them soak for 24 hours.

¼ tsp – ground cinnamon

John A. Tip: Add a small amount of bourbon or apple pie liqueur to keep bars moist and distribute the flavor throughout.
  • For the base and streusel topping: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter the bottom of an 8”x8” baking pan.
John A. Tip: Use parchment paper to line the pan instead of butter.
  • Put the flour, oats, sugars, baking soda and salt in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse 6 times, about 3 seconds per pulse, until some of the oatmeal is finely chopped and some still large or whole. Drizzle in the melted butter, toss with a fork and then pulse until the mixture comes together, about 8 times.
  • Press two-thirds of the oat mixture into the prepared pan.
John A. Tip: Use a scale to accurately measure two-thirds of the mixture.
Squeeze spoonfuls of the remaining mixture in your palm to make chunks – some larger, some smaller – and place in a small bowl.
John A. Tip: Press remaining mixture into one large ball first to incorporate dry pieces.
  • Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate both the base and the chunks for 30 minutes.
  • For the filling:

Put the apple butter, dried fruit, cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of water in the cleaned bowl of the food processor and pulse to a chunky paste. Spread the filling over the chilled base. Scatter the streusel topping over the filling, leaving some of the filling showing through. Bake until the streusel is toasty and crisp, about 30 minutes. Cool completely on a rack, about 2 hours, before slicing into 16 squares.
